In which I make a triumphant return

Store_cover140 If this was one of my grandmother's stories, the door would open slowly to the big party with all of the cast members sipping cocktails, revealing me, looking slightly different under a halo of soft light, apparently emerged from a supposed grave.

Gasp!, the crowd would turn to circle around me.

We thought she was a goner!

She looks so fabulous for surviving an electrical explosion, a fall down an elevator shaft and brain surgery!

Are those extensions or has she been gone that long?

And I would simply nod. Yes, I'm back. I am finally back.

That is how it would be if I was a daytime diva. The reality is that my life has just been my life and I simply needed a hiatus from Sassafrass. No family members weeping as the bandages are slowly unwound from my head, no surprise children and far fewer evening gowns. Just all of the bits of real life that add up to make a few transitions, some stress, too little sleep and just...too much.

So I took a break here so I could give my energy and attention to all those other details. Here are five highlights from my leave of Sassafrass:

1. Mama's got a brand new gig. In the New Year, I began a great new gig over at That's Fit, a healthy living blog. I'm thrilled to be writing FitBeauty, a feature on all the styley aspects of living well. Read it, smear it on and then work it with me, grrrls.

2.  Some of my favorite writers set up shop in the blogosphere. Help me give these mama bloggers some support at Comfort Food, DFW Mom, DunnBryant and HSJ Writer.

3.  I finally met Danielle of the fabulous Foodmomiac in person! We had a delightful take-out dinner and a conversation that I think could've gone on much later (sigh...the old kiddo/career alarm clock comes early, don't it?).

4. Lil E discovered neminems (not the rapper, the irresistible candy), my brother and his fiancee set a date for their wedding (just to prove that Virginia is, in fact, just for lovers?), I finally decided that Getting My Shit Together this month means using my Christmas money to hire a cleaning service come in at least once (which is not related to this next bit, honest), and not one but two mice invaded our snug little home, sending me into a complete stupor, to my mom and dad's house for three nights and eventually to my therapist. Nice, right? Thank God for my extraordinarily patient, brave, rodent warrior husband who offed one of the offenders and then hooked us up with some funky electrical devices that keep those fuckers away for good (or at least that's what I choose to believe...and my therapist fully supports me in that).

5.  Our plans to bridge the gap from playing house to buying a house were averted by some (ahem) job changes, but we've made a good compromise, I think. We're almost-officially looking for a condo that can hold us, a booty-load of toys that make too much noise, too many plastic tubs of sadly neglected craft supplies and fraternity t-shirts, and maybe (eek) at some point, another child (no no no, not yet...not even close). So if anyone knows of a great deal on The Perfect Place for a very quiet loud but lovable little family, let me know.

There have been connections and there has been chaos, and I think (touch wood), we're OK.  My Soapie will have to remain in syndication, even if I've worked very hard these past few weeks to perfect my long, slow stare. It's good to be back, my friends. It's good to be back.

Welcome home

Dirtdevilgreen It has been too long since I've been on here, but good Lord, have I needed the break. I started a new gig (more on that later) and had a fast and furious and fabulous Christmas with the fam. Then, we all flew cross-country for week's worth of in-laws, more Christmasing and a wonderful New Year's with our best friends and their kiddos. Then, back to the Chi on an overly-delayed plane and without lunch or dinner and home to an apartment in dire need of de-Christmasing, de-cluttering and re-organizing. Tomorrow, tomorrow. For some reason, this 412th trip to Portland and back has kicked my ass, perhaps because Lil E's schedule is teetering between Central and Pacific time zones and because I am working into the wee hours to make several upcoming, stressful deadlines. January...sigh. Needless to say, Sassafrass has been waiting in the wings patiently while I've slowly picked up my life (and a few stray metallic bows and smashed Macy's boxes). And now, I'm back.

Today, I'm back to my favorite cafe in the neighborhood with free wi-fi and homemade hummus and a much-needed, fully-loaded latte. Bruce and Lil E are revelling in the glory of all the yard, snow and housecleaning implements at Sears (thank you, Sears, for your row of brightly colored Dirt Devils, line of shiny brand new riding mowers and fully wall of weed whippers, leaf blowers and many other toddler squeal-inducers that fill your basement level) that will hopefully segue seamlessly into naptime (for both big papa and the wee one).  The dishes are done, the laundry is on its first (yes, first) turn through the building dryer, I've almost decided on a Christmas New Year's card photo, one deadline's been extended a few relieving days, and on this Sunday, life is good.

Rockin' around the blogging tag

Since it is Christmas Eve and the boy is wiped out from last-minute shopping and the department-store-competitive wrapping is done and I've resigned myself to sending New Year's cards, this is the first big sigh of relief I've had all week.

Actually, it is the second big sigh. The first cleansing breath took place at the most-needed yoga class of all time yesterday, where I asana-ed my paycheck-never-arrived worries away. That was a glorious two hours and was quickly followed by a take-away lunch and putting Christmas on the credit card we've (sigh) been paying down all year. Now, Bruce and I are enjoying a bit of respite from the holi-mania and sipping on big mugs of coffee and Kahlua while Lil E sleeps soundly in the next room. This quiet, this calm is exactly what I was hoping today would be.

While I am still feeling all this buzz from the true meaning of Christmas (and maybe a teense from the generous shot of liqueur), it seems like a very good time to indulge in the game of blog tag that City Mama sent my way. I'm considering this virtual cocktail party the holiday bash that WAHM/Ds never get. Grab your own breakfasty booze and join me for Five Things You Probably Didn't Know About Grrrlfriend Jess:

  • Bobbellbozoclowncolor I performed on the Bozo Show not once but twice. No, not in the bucket game, with a guitar group. Watch out for me, Stormie! I'm comin' for ya.
  • I have indulged in this on occasion, as much as I hate to admit it.
  • Even though I was a clubber gold-card holder, I totally rocked Sally Jesse's in high school. Owwww!

Now go forth into your Christmukkwanzaasoltice with a bit more peace, knowing that you know your Grrrlfriend a bit better. Foodmomiac, Kim and Doug, you are ohhhhh-so it!

Here's to a wonderful holiday season and a year ahead
full of peace, grace, laughter and amazing adventures
with the ones you love most!
